Musically shifting between powerful bursts and dreamy soundscapes, I Was Not Magnificent keeps the quartet’s progressive edge, with hypnotic drum beats that keep you on the tip of your toes, but ultimately becomes their most personal song, featuring words spoken by Ben Walsh (bass player), whose experience with Chronic Kidney Disease has been a defining part of both his life and this album.
They have made music their solace: “Diagnosed in 2021, Ben began undergoing dialysis three times a week to keep his body functioning. It’s a gruelling and often exhausting process—physically, emotionally, and mentally. There have been countless moments when Ben, in the midst of his treatments, has turned to music for solace and strength. Music became a lifeline during those times when it felt like his body was betraying him.”
In addition to the spoken word, the lyrics were also written by Ben, giving the song an even more vulnerable tone rather than using their usual voice-over approach.
They said: “The words in the track are raw and reflective, a quiet acknowledgment of how, in the face of illness or struggle, music has a power that transcends the physical. It’s a reminder that, even in our darkest hours, we are connected to something much greater than our individual struggles. The song is not just about music’s power, but about the realisation that sometimes, when we feel the weakest, we can find the most strength through the things that move us.”

Music changed me — and still does.
I'm not particularly good at writing, nor do I know much about post-rock, so I’m not even sure what I’m doing here! 😅
Mostly enjoying melancholic music… I guess there is comfort in sadness for me. That probably made me the perfect target for post-rock when it found me. That said, I enjoy all kinds of music — especially soundtracks, shoegaze, and post-punk.
I’m constantly on the lookout for sounds that will blow my mind — that rare kind of feeling you don’t experience often in a lifetime… Falling in love with a new artist or a new sound... but when it happens, it's priceless.
That’s what happened to me with a few artists, including Alex Henry Foster, Emma Ruth Rundle, Loma, Oiseaux-Tempête, Fugazi, Switchfoot, and maybe a few more…
(Sorry Efrim, but I still love GY!BE 😉)
